Flying in Zillertal

Zillertal is the widest tributary valley of the River Inn and is internationally regarded as one of the best and most attractive flying areas in the world. A range of different mountains to fly from, with ideal opportunities for launching in all directions, makes it an oasis for paragliders and hang-gliders, for beginners, those who just enjoy flying and discerning long-distance pilots!

An area of over 1000 km² and a valley length of over 32 km offer flying enthusiasts a magical mountain landscape that will make all their flying dreams come true!

Flying area: Penken Mayrhofen

Travel with the Penken cable car up to the summit station, then change to the chairlift (foot passengers also carried in winter). The launch area is located at the end of the "mini-lift" and is marked by a windsock. You will see the windsock shortly before leaving the chairlift on your right-hand side.

Paragliders must have a glide ratio of at least 6 to be able to clear the first level section. Do not fly over the chairlift pylons on the south side (danger of turbulence!), but keep a safe distance of at least 50m.

When the wind is from a southerly or westerly direction, the Finkenberg/Penken launch area offers an alternative. Walking time on a level footpath towards Penkenjoch: approx. 15 - 20 min.

  • Launch direction: N-NE-E
  • Altitude difference: 1200m
  • Wind indicator at the valley terminus (panoramic camera)

Flying area: Penkenjoch Finkenberg

Travel by the Finkenberger Alm cable car as far as the 'Mittelstation' (halfway), then change to the chairlift. The southerly launch area is located opposite the Hasenmulden lift (tow lift), the westerly launch area is located next to the Katzenmoosbahn summit station (chairlift).

When the wind is from a northerly or easterly direction, the Mayrhofen/Penken launch area offers an alternative. Walking time on a level footpath towards Gschößwand: approx. 15 - 20 min.

  • Launch direction: S-SW-W
  • Altitude difference: 1400m

Flying area: Arbiskopf

By bus (in front of the flying school) or by private car.

Zillertaler Höhenstraße is a toll road, but there is a cheaper rate for paragliders (you need to identify yourself as a paraglider at the toll booth). The easterly launch area is directly below the road, the southerly one behind the kiosk. An ideal starting point for long-distance flights!

  • Launch direction: S-SW / E-NE
  • Altitude difference: 1400m
  • not accessible in snow

Flying area: Perler

By Para-Taxi from Mühlbacher Hof, Schwendau or by private car (Please note: no parking available) via the Zillertaler Höhenstraße road. The launch area is located directly below the Höhenstraße road, just before the church in Perler.

  • Launch direction: SE-E
  • Altitude difference: 530m
  • Zillertaler Flugschule - Training Areas
